Kinds Of Mental Retardation

Kinds Of Mental RetardationTypes of Mental Retardation?

Hello, I am a second year student Sped Beed and I wonder if someone could direct me or give me a list of types / degree of MR

Mental retardation is a disability characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior manifested in conceptual, social and practical coping skills.

An accurate diagnosis of mental retardation requires three elements:

An IQ of 70 or below
The determination of deficits in adaptive behavior
The origins of the disability before the age of 18.

Levels of mental retardation

Traditionally mental retardation has been divided into four levels of severity, based largely on IQ scores:

A mild mental retardation, IQ 70 to 55:50
Moderate mental retardation, an IQ of 55/50-40/35
Severe mental retardation, an IQ of 40/35-25/20
Profound mental retardation, IQ scores below 25/20
Generally, these levels are increasingly used in clinical settings. In school, words like "severe disabilities" or "severe handicap" are more frequently observed.

HOWEVER, normal intelligence is said to be 85-115 and that schedule does not reflect those of 70-84 which can be considered "slow". They may be able to learn, but it will take much longer and they will have more difficulties.

I'm in class right now called for students. We just learned about Mr..

1. Slightly MR (formerly Educably deficient): they can be taught the basic school subjects and they can not understand, they will be in the regular edition. classroom.

2. Moderate MR (formerly trainable retarded ... was regarded as discriminatory): they are usually in a classroom self (as a resource room or special room ED) and these children can develop skills for self-help but can not understand the basic school subjects and perhaps retaught often

3. Severe / profound MR, these children have very, very low IQ and operating skills; they pretty much are not able to learn something, very dependent on others for basic care

Hope this helps!

Depending on where you live, the schools away from educable, trainable and labels for the mentally handicapped deep. You will often hear the terms independent, supported and participatory used today. Consider these labels regarding the level of support a child needs to function. For example, there may have children with an IQ recyclable has great skill and adaptation is very independent in many areas ...... better to say it operates at an independent level. On the other hand, there may be a student with an IQ educable, but because of other disabilities (physical, visual, etc.), he / she needs lots of support to function in their environment .. . they would be considered supported. This is a more positive look at a person .... this level of support they need to participate, not what they IQ points are related. Anyone who works with students with learning disabilities will tell you that IQ is not very useful in defining what they can / will do.

Mild mental retardation (MIMR)
Modreate mental retardation (EDRD)
Severe Mental Retardation
Profound Mental Retardation

The last two are sometimes catagoirzed together.

I hope it helps.

im juz lvl HAV WEEE 3 thx for the 2 points, i 3 becomelvl

Down Syndrome

Mental retardation is a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and skills like communication, taking care of himself, and social skills. These limitations will cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than a typical child. Children with mental retardation may take longer to learn to speak, walk and take care of their personal needs, such as dressing or eating. They are.
