Leaking Heart Valve

Leaking Heart ValveWho knows something about a leaky heart valve?

My 10 year old boy was diagnosed with a leaking heart valve yesterday. The doctor is trying to do, to see a specialist asap. She does not seem that concerned, but I do not know if she was just trying to keep us quiet about it.How serious is this, and surgery is the only way to fix it, or do they have drugs for this disease.

You did not indicate which valve is leaking. Most complaints are probably due to the valve mitral valve and / or aortic valve. The heart valves are damaged due to rheumatic fever.
mitral stenosis (MS) is a narrowing of the mitral orifice impeding the flow of blood from the left atrium to left ventricle. The (almost) the case is invariable rheumatic fever. Common complications are pulmonary hypertension, atrial fibrillation, thromboembolism. The symptoms are those of heart failure, signs include an opening snap and diastolic murmur. Diagnosis is by physical examination and echocardiography. The prognosis is good. Medical treatment includes diuretics, β-blockers or rate limiting calcium channel Ca, and anticoagulants, effectively treating the disease is more severe balloon valvotomy, surgical commissurotomy, or valve replacement.
mitral regurgitation (MR) is the inability of the mitral valve causing flow of the left ventricle (LV) into the left atrium during systole. Common causes include mitral valve prolapse, ischemic papillary muscle dysfunction, rheumatic fever, and annular dilatation secondary to left ventricular systolic dysfunction and dilation. Complications include chronic heart failure, arrhythmias, and endocarditis. Symptoms and signs include palpitations, dyspnea, and a holosystolic apical murmur. Diagnosis is by physical examination and echocardiography. The prognosis depends on left ventricular function and severity and duration of MR. Patients with asymptomatic MR may be controlled, but progressive symptoms or MR requires a mitral valve repair or replacement.

I was also diagnosed with an aortic valve that is leaking to 10 years. Mine wasn't really bad at the time, I am now 16 and still havent had surgery for it (the surgery is really the only way to solve the problem, they can put on drugs as well) Your son should be good, I had no restrictions for this problem to heart, I lived a normal life, but the best thing is to let him see a cardiologist to see how serious it is.

Good luck to you and your son

People with leaky heart valves usually see a cardiologist, a heart specialist. What they generally do what is called an echo, which is a type of ultrasound of the heart. This may explain how bad is.You drain valves on each side of your heart, they work with your blood flow properly through your heart when it beats. If the heart valve does not leak much, they usually followed with repeat ECHO. If the flight is such that you short of breath, easily fatigued or the like, they may recommend surgery. This is usually the only option, there is no medicine that can solve the problem. If surgery is necessary, they will replace the valve. If surgery is necessary to contact the cardiologist a heart surgeon. Ask questions. You should see a specialist and then they can better explain it all for you. Be healthy heart.
