People With DementiaMusic and art therapy as an effective treatment for people with dementia

Dementia is a word for a group of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain. People who have dementia significantly impaired intellectual functioning that interferes with normal activities and relationships. Memory loss is a common symptom of dementia, memory loss by itself does not mean that a person with dementia.

Research is pursuing a variety of promising results for treatment of dementia. Pharmacological interventions are available but have limited capacity to treat many features of the syndrome. Little research has been directed towards non-pharmacological treatments. In this review, the evidence for music and art therapy as a treatment is considered.

Previous studies of the Fundacia ACE, Institut Catala Neurociancies Aplicadas of Barcelona, Spain, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have shown that brain activity increases, particularly with regard to memory and cognition may help delay the loss of cognitive abilities in people with Alzheimer's.

Music and art therapy can help people with dementia to recall memories and enjoyment bid. Art therapy can help to reconcile their feelings by identifying and working with anger, resentment and other emotions. In drawing, a person with dementia who can not speak can show how he or she feels. This can give them a sense of control over their feelings so they can relax and relieve stress.

Music can act as a stimulus to awaken the buried memories, or to evoke emotional responses that may be otherwise inaccessible. In this way, it can obtain results which could take weeks more usual to speak of psychotherapy. It may be a useful way of healing for people of any age or origin and may be very useful in caring for people with dementia. The part of the brain that reacts to music is the longest, and a person may still be able to play or sing, enjoy music and be calmed by it, after most of the other faculties disappeared.

The value of the arts to human survival tends to be underestimated in our society. Song, music, dance, theater, and art forms were the most fundamental and consistent expression throughout human history, and very important for the survival of civilizations. They are essential for companies to prosper. In psychiatric circles, they may provide a healing deeper and more durable than standard forms of treatment.
