Treating Seizures

Treating SeizuresHave you had any luck with other methods of treatment of seizures in dogs?

My dog (10 years) acted pretty funny here and there in recent days. Tonight I saw him come in what I am positive is a seizure.

I know that people put their dogs on phenobarbital for seizures, but I also read that it can cause liver damage with long-term use.

Bottom line: I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow morning. I do * something * to keep them healthy and happy. I feel much better if there is a kind of treatment out there that will not damage the liver. I do not want anything to shorten its lifespan.

If you have an experience with a more natural treatment that has been effective with your dog, please let me know.

I think you jump the gun a bit here. You do not know the cause of crises of your dog but if you do not know if phenobarbital is prescribed. But if it is, the vet will be monitored regularly. There are other drugs out there, and can be used. You have to trust your vet. Ask about long-term drug affects different so you can make a more informed decision for your dog. I hope it will be ok!

someone told me that if u feed the cauliflower every day they will never have another seizure.

Epilepsy is a disease of youth. When older dogs begin having seizures, it is usually due to a brain tumor. Do you have a dog cancer wherever could have spread? Does he have masses that you feel somewhere? Shortness of breath? ect?

Sometimes, kidney or liver failure also cause seizures as the body becomes overwhelmed by toxins.

Sometimes people think a dog has seizures during the episode could be seized as a low sugar. If the blood of a dog is not good to eat sometimes his blood sugar will plummet, it will go into a crisis as attack.Next time your pet as if it acts in a crisis will try to give a little bit of light honey on his tongue, this will get him out of the attack.

We have a dog who has seizures. I know how you're scared and worried. Anyway, O'Ney was on potassium bromide for a couple of years, to minimize its episodes. It worked great, but we have recently discovered that the drug's heart, "Heart Guard" has been the cause of his seizures. Anyway, it is another drug to the heart, we stopped the potassium bromide and is seizure free. Anyway, giving the drug dog can help, I am not a veterinarian, but the main thing to consider is the comfort and well-being of your pet. Do your research and take advice from your veterinarian! Oh, and look at the Heart Guard thing: Make sure you tell your veterinarian if he uses it! It could be something as simple as that.
